Houghton Lake

This year our annual family vacation was on Houghton Lake, in the swinging town of Prudenville, MI.

Houghton Lake is the largest inland lake in Michigan and the 6th largest natural inland lake in the United States. It's located just north of the center of the state, in the circled area.

Our objective for this Airbnb rental was to have a good beach for the boys to play on and it did not disappoint!

There was 100 feet of beach front! The water was so clear and the bottom was nice and sandy!

And it was very shallow! You could walk out 50 yards and it only was up to mid thigh.

Which was perfect for Max and Levi! Brad is on his knees in this photo!

The house itself was nice, but not nearly as nice as ones we've rented before.

I didn't take any pictures of the inside because it was nothing remarkable but it was comfortable and we pretty much had everything we needed.

We got to see beautiful sunsets almost every night.

There was a great playset that the boys had a lot of fun with!

We spent a lot of time feeding ducks!

But mostly they played in the water!

We found a blow up jet ski and they loved it!

One day we went to Lakeland Recreation area where the boys got to drive little go carts.

Rich and I actually drove the adult go carts too and they are just as fun as I remembered!

Every morning Shauna and I walked back and forth on the street the house was on.

This carving in front of one of the houses was beautiful!

And these hollyhocks were gorgeous and huge!

The week went by super-fast as vacations usually do!

I took these last pictures when I was getting in the car to come home!

It's always so nice to spend a week together and especially to spend it with the boys. We made lots of good memories!

Next year we plan on staying on Higgins Lake which is a few miles north of Houghton Lake, a smaller but beautiful lake!

Anyway, this is not the first time we've spent a week on Houghton Lake. Back in 1975, the year I graduated, Rich and I went there with his family and stayed at a resort. We came back in 1981 when Chris was 2 and Shauna was 6 weeks old and again in 1982 when Chris was 3 and Shauna was 1.

Next post I'll show you our trip down memory lane!

See you then and thanks for stopping by!

  5. What a special time together. We are hoping to do our first 'adult' family trip with all our kids and grands next year. We are thinking about doing the Finger Lakes and getting a VRBO or similar. How far in advance do you book?

    1. We start looking for places while we are on vacation and usually book them 11-12 months in advance. The ones on a lake book up very fast!

  6. The lake with that shallow, clear water is perfect for little people. And for me too because I like to see what is swimming around me. What a lovely time and how fun to make NEW memories at an OLD stomping ground.

  13. Hello. I would love to know the name of the house you rented on Houghton. We live just south of Flint and would like to find someplace "up north" for a little r&r.

    1. Hi I don't really know the name. My SIL makes all the arrangements. He uses VRBO and finds great places for us. Thanks!

  14. vacation....I need one! Looks like you all had fun, and such a pretty place also. I worked with a young photographer once that was from Mich. and so is my SIL. When I mentioned that my SIL was from there, the photographer held up his hand and said, point to where.....I said what, they he told me that Mich was shaped like a glove and if you asked someone from there, where they were from they would point to a spot on the hand (glove)

  15. Impressive area. I love the cottage. A friend of mine, her mom had one for a long time. We loved going there. They still have it in the family. Great little spot.
