Surprising Estate Sale

Last Sunday I went to this estate sale at a condo in Northville. It's not for sale yet but Zillow estimated its value at $239,000. It's only 1,200 square feet. I took this picture off the internet because I forgot to take one at the sale.

This small condo was really packed with stuff! But nice stuff! There was a lot of beautiful costume jewelry.

I really liked this sugar and creamer set.

It was priced at $15 but everything was 50% off so $7.50

There were several beautiful sets of dishes.

The ranged from $150 to $450 a set.

This hand painted butter dish was so pretty.

It was $10

Then I saw this painting for $30 and I saw it was done by Janisse, who I used to work with at the CBD store a few years ago. She's a local artist and I know I've mentioned her a few times in this blog.

I was going to text her and say "Hey, I saw your painting at an estate sale".

As I continued to walk around, I saw more of her paintings hanging on the walls. When I saw that the basement was filled with even more of her paintings and drawings I started to suspect that it was her condo that I was in.

Sure enough, I found an Amazon box with her name and address on it and that confirmed my suspicion.

Then I got worried because normally when an estate sale is so full of someone's life it's because they passed away. So, I asked one of the sales staff and thankfully they said no, she's just downsizing and simplifying her life!  Whew! I was relieved!

Here's what I bought at this sale.

This silver garden flower.

And these two Ralph Lauren sweaters. The darker beige one has patches on the elbows which I don't like so I will be taking them off.

Total spent: $27.

The flower was pretty rusted so I painted it.

Here's what it looks like now.

I'm not sure I like it. We'll see if it grows on me!

In other news: My friend Karen is giving me her grandmothers old sewing machine. I don't know what brand it is, but her grandmother was a seamstress so I'm sure it's probably a good one. I can't wait to get it!

That's all for now. I'll be back later to show you my new-to-me sewing machine.

Until then take care and thanks for stopping by!

  1. That is so funny that you knew the owner of the condo. Glad she is only downsizing. From everything you showed, she seems to have really good taste. I love the RL shirts you got. They will be awesome this fall. Have a great weekend.

  4. Isn't that a coincidence. I'm glad she's just downsizing! It seems I am downsizing all the time! I have some metal plant stakes that I keep meaning to paint. I like the color you chose - looks pretty.

  6. This was such an interesting little adventure to follow, it had that quiet thrill of walking through someone else’s carefully built life and noticing all the layers tucked into each corner.

That moment when you realized the paintings were all by someone you actually knew really stood out. It must have felt surreal at first, almost like the room shifted once you made that connection. I can imagine the relief too when you found out it was a downsizing situation rather than anything sad. Have you ever had that kind of coincidence happen before, where something so familiar turns up in a completely unexpected place like that?

The finds themselves were lovely in that old-fashioned, treasure-hunt way. The sugar and creamer set and that hand painted butter dish feel like pieces that would have stories attached to them, even if we do not know them. The fact that the whole place was so full yet still felt curated says a lot about the life lived there.

Your finds were very practical too in a satisfying way, especially for the price. The silver garden flower has that “wait and see” charm, sometimes those pieces take a while to settle in before they feel right in a space. Did you decide yet where it might end up, or are you still moving it around to different spots?

The sewing machine news is a lovely thread running through this whole update. There is something special about receiving a tool like that from a family connection, especially one with a seamstress history behind it. It feels like it will carry forward more than just function, almost like it brings a bit of continuity with it.

Looking forward to seeing what you create once you get it set up.

  7. The flower you painted is beautiful!! It is just what this area needed. What a coincidence about your co-worker. I like the flower plates, but the plate sets are expensive.

  12. Thinking about the elbow patches on that one sweater.... might there be holes or stains underneath them? My late husband had a couple of tweed sport jackets with leather patches on the elbows, like what Father Knows Best used to wear on TV years ago. I loved those jackets best of all his more dressy clothes.
