My friend Karen recently gifted me her grandmothers sewing machine.
The brand is White, which I had never heard of before but I'm no expert.
I googled it and this model was built in 1964. It's a pretty powerful sewing machine that was popular with seamstresses. That makes sense because Karen's grandmother was a seamstress.
There was only one bobbin, and it had a pretty aqua thread in it.
Probably from the last time her grandmother used it. I'm sure neither Karen nor her mother ever used it.
I had some bobbins left from an old Kenmore sewing machine that I sold at a garage sale.
The Kenmore was my paternal grandmother's and it never worked right for me. But then again, I didn't realize you had to clean, oil and maintain a sewing machine back then! The lady who bought it at my garage sale was so thrilled to get it!
The bobbins don't fit my Featherweight but luckily they work in this White sewing machine.
I was able to find the manual online and print it.
My ultimate goal is to use it to make a jelly roll rug which I can't do on my Featherweight because it does not zigzag.
I'm so excited to have this sewing machine. I plugged it in and it did run but I only ran it for a second because it's been sitting for many years and needs to be cleaned, oiled and the gears greased before I sew anything on it.
In other news: Rich and I volunteered at The Ronald McDonald House in Ann Arbor at U of M Mott Children's Hospital.
We were with the Baking Buddies through our church. We made 2 dozen muffins and two pans of brownies. Then we put them in individual bags for the families to grab before heading to the hospital.
We really enjoyed it and will be going again in the Fall. Afterwards we walked through the peony garden.
They were at their peak last week but still looked beautiful!
That's all for now. I have another estate sale to tell you about the next time.
Until then take care and thanks for stopping by!

I've heard of the White sewing machine. They've around since the late 1800's. My grandmother had one and you're right, those who were seamstress tended toward them. My grandmother had been one. The old ones can fetch a good price so it was awfully nice of them to give it to you. Have fun and let us know what you plan to sew!
ReplyDeleteMy mom had a white sewing machine and it worked well for her. Glad your bobbins fit it.
ReplyDeleteThat's a great place to volunteer. The poppies are so pretty!
Congrats on the "new" sewing machine. Yes, I've heard of White sewing machines. I hope you get a lot of enjoyment from it, and when you make your jelly roll rug, please share pictures!!
ReplyDeleteThat's a nice sewing machine. Good luck with it. So nice that you did all that volunteer baking.!!
ReplyDeleteHow neat that you and Rich got to volunteer for the Ronald McDonald House! And your "new" sewing machine looks like a real beauty. Solid! I have never used a sewing machine but my late mother-in-law was a crack seamstress and had several gleaming machines lined up. She could make anything. Can't wait to see your jelly roll rug! xoxo 🏴☠️
ReplyDeleteI have heard of that brand of sewing machine. What a great old machine that is.
ReplyDeleteThe Peonies are gorgeous! I have never heard of this brand of sewing machine either. Does it work with a foot pedal? My mom's old machine did. What a wonderful thing to volunteer for!!
ReplyDeleteIt actually works with a knee pedal which is different from what I'm used to but not hard to use!
DeleteWhat a sweet gift from your friend. I loved hearing about your volunteer day at the Ronald McDonald House, that sounded really meaningful. And the peony garden must have been beautiful to walk through.
ReplyDeleteWhat a wonderful gift. I don't know what a jelly roll rug is, so I look forward to pictures.
ReplyDeleteWow! White machines go way back second to Singer machines! Well made!! You did good girlfriend! SO happy you're making a rug! I thought about it and even bought a jellyroll for it...nah...maybe placemats! lol
ReplyDeleteKudos to you and hubby for volunteering!!! How wonderful!
hugs
Donna
It's going to be a challenge, but I think I'm up for it! I won't be starting until the fall though.
DeleteWell isn't that just something.. so sweet of your friend.
ReplyDeleteWhat a wonderful gift!
ReplyDeleteI hadn’t heard of White sewing machines before, but it sounds like you’ve got a real workhorse with such a special history behind it. I’m glad you found bobbins that fit, and I hope you have lots of fun bringing it back to life.
Kudos to you both for volunteering; what a great organization to assist. I love peonies!
ReplyDeleteI love that you are giving this old sewing machine new life; can't wait to see the creations that come from this gift.
